For Donny Cates, Cosmic Ghost Rider was an idea dating as far back as 2009. The character’s co-creators, Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw, manage to tell this origin story in a mere 13 pages of gloriously illustrated comic art.įor most, Cosmic Ghost Rider first appeared in the pages of the thirteenth issue of the second volume of Thanos on November 22, 2017. In exchange for Earth, Galactus grants Frank Castle the power cosmic to become a herald of Galactus and help hunt the Mad Titan. Eventually, a wounded Galactus comes to Earth seeking the aid of the world’s mightiest heroes to find nothing save the lone Frank Castle. After his transformation, Frank Castle travels the now barren Earth for millennia and slowly loses his mind. Mephisto, hearing Frank’s dying wish to exact vengeance on Thanos, resurrects Castle as a ghost rider. If you’re not familiar with the character, Cosmic Ghost Rider is Frank Castle – The Punisher – from an alternate universe where he and all other life in the universe is murdered by Thanos. Below I’ll explore how this character came to be through art, fanfiction, and tattoos. It’s this rich complexity that drew me to the character and set me on a long, exciting art collecting adventure. Cosmic Ghost Rider is arguably a character who could only exist now – with said 80 years of history to inform his complicated legacy. With a backstory steeped in Marvel’s long-running cosmic lore and 70’s Marvel’s horror, Cosmic Ghost Rider is a character composed equally of Jack Kirby’s bold aesthetic influence and the endearing passion of lifelong Marvel fans. Cosmic Ghost Rider is perhaps one of the most fascinating of these modern creations. Recently, I’ve been deeply fascinated by the layered lore of Marvel’s modern stories woven from a lexicon of iconic moments and characters built over Marvel’s 80 plus year history.
